Metafields and Tags (Shopify)

Metafields and Tags (Shopify)

What are Metafields and Tags?

Shopify lets merchants store extra product data as metafields (structured key-value pairs attached to products, variants, or collections) and tags (free-form labels applied to products). Both are rich sources of searchable and filterable data that ExpertRec can surface in your search experience.

The Metafields & Tags screen is available exclusively on the Shopify version of ExpertRec. It maps these Shopify-native data points to fields in your ExpertRec search index so shoppers can filter and search by custom attributes you have defined in your store.

Where to Find This Setting

In your ExpertRec control panel, navigate to Metafields & Tags in the left sidebar. The route is /ecom/metafields. This menu item only appears when your account is connected to a Shopify store.

Mapping Metafields to Index Fields

  1. Open Metafields & Tags from the sidebar.
  2. The page lists all metafield namespaces and keys detected in your Shopify catalog.
  3. For each metafield you want to make searchable or filterable, click Add to Index and choose the target index field name and data type (text, number, or boolean).
  4. Save your mapping. ExpertRec will pull the metafield values during the next sync.

Mapping Tags to Index Fields

Product tags are automatically detected. You can expose them as a filterable facet by enabling the tags field on this screen and choosing whether to display them as a multi-select filter, a color swatch, or a plain label group in your search UI.

Use Cases

  • Custom attributes as filters: Metafields such as custom.material, custom.fit, or specs.wattage become filter options in the search sidebar.
  • Tag-based filtering: Tags like sale, new-arrival, or bundle become one-click filter options for shoppers.
  • Searchable specifications: Technical specifications stored in metafields (compatibility, dimensions, certifications) become part of the full-text search index so queries like “UL certified” return the right products.

Notes

  • This feature is Shopify only. It is not available on WooCommerce, BigCommerce, or Custom Stack plans.
  • After adding a new metafield mapping, trigger a full re-index from General Settings if you want existing products updated immediately rather than waiting for the next scheduled sync.
  • Metafield values with mixed data types (a field that is sometimes a string and sometimes a number) should be mapped as text to avoid indexing errors.
