Geo Merchandising

Overview

Geo Merchandising allows you to show different products or change result rankings based on a customer’s geographic location. This is useful for stores that carry region-specific inventory, run location-based promotions, or need to surface locally relevant products first. Navigate to Merchandising > Geo Merchandising in your ExpertRec dashboard (route: /ecom/merchandise/geo-merchandising).

How It Works

ExpertRec detects the customer’s location from their IP address and matches it against the regions you define. When a match is found, the configured product rules for that region are applied on top of the base search results.

Setting Up a Geo Rule

  1. Go to Merchandising > Geo Merchandising and click Add Region.
  2. Define the region by country, state, or a custom geographic zone.
  3. Add product rules for that region: boost specific products, pin items, or hide products that are unavailable in that location.
  4. Save and activate the region rule. The rule applies to all searches made from within the defined region.

Use Cases

  • Regional inventory: Boost products that are stocked in a nearby warehouse to reduce shipping time and cost.
  • Location-based promotions: Surface a summer sale collection only for customers in warm-climate regions.
  • Compliance and availability: Hide products that cannot be sold in certain countries or states due to legal restrictions.
  • Language and catalog variants: Show region-specific product variants (for example, voltage-compatible electronics) based on country.

Tips

  • Region rules are applied in priority order. If a customer matches multiple regions, the highest-priority rule wins.
  • Test geo rules by using a VPN or proxy set to the target region before making them live.
  • Keep region definitions broad (country level) unless you have strong data showing the need for state or city-level segmentation.
