Merchandising
Overview
ExpertRec Search offers a suite of merchandising tools to control how products appear in search results. You can promote, demote, pin, and customize product rankings to align search with your business goals.
Boosting Rules
Navigate to Merchandising > Boosting Rules to create rules that promote or demote products based on field values.
The search results can be adjusted depending on field values. Three data types are supported:
- String
- Boolean
- Numeric
| Data type | Conditions | Description |
| String | Exact match, Starts with, Contains, If not empty | Match against text field values |
| Boolean | True, False | Match against true/false fields (e.g., in_stock) |
| Numeric | Exact match, If not empty, Boost in proportion to values | Match against numeric fields (e.g., price, rating) |
Enter a small positive score (e.g., 0.1) to promote or a small negative score (e.g., -0.2) to demote. Caution: a large score can exaggerate the effect. Click Update to save all changes.
Visual Merchandising (Pinning)
Navigate to Merchandising > Visual Merchandising to pin specific products to specific positions for given search queries.
- Search result pinning: Pin products to appear first for specific search queries.
- Collection pinning: Pin products within specific collection/category pages.
- Position pinning: Pin a product to a specific position (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.).
Use pinning sparingly. ExpertRec recommends relying on automated ranking features (AI Merchandising, Boosting Rules) for most queries, and reserving pinning for high-priority promotional campaigns.
AI Merchandising (Click-Based Ranking)
Navigate to AI > AI Merchandising to enable click-based ranking.
- ExpertRec tracks which products users click on in search results and uses this data to improve ranking over time.
- Products that get more clicks for a query gradually rank higher for that query.
- Takes 1 to 2 weeks of data to show meaningful impact.
- This often outperforms manual rules because it reflects real customer behavior.
Geo Merchandising
Navigate to Merchandising > Geo Merchandising to show different products or rankings based on customer location.
- Configure regions and product rules.
- Use cases: Show winter gear to northern regions, summer items to southern regions, or promote locally available inventory.
A/B Testing
Navigate to Merchandising > A/B Testing to test different ranking configurations.
- Split traffic between configurations and measure click-through rate and conversion.
- Use this to validate changes before rolling them out to all users.
Showcase Products
Navigate to Merchandising > Showcase Products to configure which products appear when a user clicks the search box before typing anything (zero-character search).
Landing Pages
Navigate to Advanced > Landing Pages to link specific search queries to custom landing pages. When a user searches for a configured term, they are redirected to the landing page instead of seeing standard search results.
