Overview
The Autocomplete page lets you control the typeahead dropdown that appears as customers type in the search box. A well-configured autocomplete experience helps shoppers find products faster and reduces zero-result searches.
Navigate to: UI Customization > Autocomplete
Number of Suggestions
Set the maximum number of suggestions shown in the dropdown. A count between 5 and 8 is recommended for most stores. Too few suggestions reduce discoverability; too many create a cluttered experience.
Suggestion Types
ExpertRec supports three types of autocomplete suggestions. You can enable or disable each type independently:
- Query suggestions: Predicted search phrases based on past search activity. These appear as text-only rows at the top of the dropdown.
- Product suggestions: Matching products shown with thumbnail, title, and price. These help customers skip the results page entirely and go directly to a product.
- Category suggestions: Links to matching categories or collection pages. Useful for stores with a large catalog organised into many categories.
Display Settings
- Minimum characters to trigger: Set how many characters a user must type before the dropdown appears. The default is 2 characters.
- Show images: Toggle product thumbnail images on or off in the suggestions dropdown.
- Show price: Display the product price alongside each product suggestion.
- Suggestion order: Control whether query suggestions, product suggestions, or category suggestions appear first in the dropdown.
Best Practices
- Enable product suggestions to give customers a direct path from typing to purchasing.
- Enable category suggestions for stores with 20 or more product categories.
- Set the minimum character trigger to 2 to balance performance with suggestion quality.
- Review the Reporting > Search Insights > Suggestions report to see which autocomplete suggestions are selected most often and adjust the suggestion count accordingly.
