The site search box is one of the most important features of your site that helps users find what they want.
A study shows that site users who search are more likely to buy (or “convert”) in your site. So what is the answer to the question “where should I position the search box” on my website? The answer is to position it in a place where your conversion rates are higher.
Measure using A/B testing software-
You can set up Google Analytics to track how many people are using your site search and measure the traffic:search:conversion ratio. (number of people who came into your site : number of people who used the search bar: number of people who bought). Position the search bar in different places. You can use an A/B testing software like Google optimize to do this.
Use heat maps-
You can also use a free heat map software like yandex metrica to see how people interacted with your search box. It can give some new insights. Here for example the image shows that people used the voice search feature more than the manual text search.
Top Right of the page
If you don’t want to do the hard work above, you can just put it on the top right. corner of your page and make sure it is prominent in size. Based on a survey user’s expect the search box to be on the top right corner. 17% of the users expected the search box to be on the top right side of the page.
